About

Afton House Books is a micro-press run by Bob Lacovara, of Afton, Virginia. Bob’s an electrical engineer, not a publisher, by trade. Back in 1999, he searched the internet for a bibliography of Jack Vance, and found the embryonic Vance Integral Edition. He got sucked in, backed the dark (but fastest) horse, and by 2006 had helped publish the original VIE. Bob acted as a member of the board, father confessor, power behind the throne, mailed fist… whatever was necessary to lubricate the gears, and sometimes, bludgeon the help. The result was history.

Over the years, people kept asking for a way to obtain the VIE. But the sets had been sold out, and the cost of producing 44 volumes would rival the cost of used sets, about $4000. So Bob gave into the temptation to print, from the VIE texts, a six volume set of the VIE. It contains all of Jack’s fiction and Paul Rhoad’s etchings from the original set. Either Bob will be a hero again with many people, or he will own a lot of copies of the VIE. Time will tell.

Just stumbled upon your reprint of J Vance’s books. I desparately wanted a VIE, but missed the proverbial boat. Now I see that I am probably too late for the CVIE. Still there is no harm in asking is there? If you have still got a set (lives in hope…) just mail me and I will purchase.

Ray, I am in the process of shipping out the final copies to those already subscribed. I don’t know whether or not I will have a set for you at the moment, since I must hold some sets against the chance of loss in shipping. Check back with me in about a week. I will post information on this site regarding any sets still available as soon as the original subscribers all have their books. I am also trying to find out what a limited run of the sets would cost: this is more expensive than the runs I have already printed, because I may print only ten sets or so.

First, many thanks for all your hard work on this project. Second, please count me affirmatively IN when the dust settles. (And that includes the slipcase as well…I can drive to Milan if need be, it’s about 5 hours.)

      Best,
      David

Bob, I too would have most definitely bought a CVIE, I was Subsrciber No. 19 on the VIE, a helper and fan parallel to yourself, can you keep me in mind for a CVIE if one remains after shipping the 1st printing? And if not I will be a subscriber to the next round.

    Regards,
    Sean.
